Moi Moi the fave party side. It goes with so many meals, from rice to garri to bread and many more. The Side that can stand on it's own!
Moi-Moi (sometimes pronounced as “my-my”) is beans with pepper and onions puree that has been slow steamed until it sets. Moi-moi is a Nigerian staple for a lot of household.
Growing up, moi-moi isn’t a dish we make at home so, I can’t really relate a lot of story to it but one time though, I remember I went to visit my aunty and they were about to prepare moi-moi and my cousins where prepping the tins needed, the old school style; The old school way where you get an empty canned or tinned evaporated milk or tomatoes and in order to get a smooth clean opening, you have to continuously drag the opened rough edge (the top of the tin) on concrete until it falls off leaving a clean and smooth opening edge. (Note: In those days, we didn’t have tin openers, as basic as it may seem to you, it wasn’t a necessity. We use knife to open tins with most of the time). After we have created a clean and smooth opening, we wash the tins then pour the moi-moi batter into it half way and then steam it. This activity is usually fun because we are chatting and catching up as we do it.
Moi-moi is generally a side dish to a lot of rice dish such as jollof rice, fried rice, etc. It also pairs perfectly with custard, pap, bread, agidi, garri, etc.
